What’s In A Habit?

To say life is hectic is an understatement. As a matter of fact, let’s be honest, it’s just plain cliche. But it’s so true. And saying we want things to change is great, but our words don’t always match our actions (darn human nature). So, let’s make some new habits. Wait, that’s so much easier said than done. Really. It is. Think about the last time you tried to change a habit. Did it work out? If it did, great! If you’re like many of us, the effort is there, but the action is lacking. So, what to do?

THE SCIENCE

There is actually a science behind forming a habit. In a scientific study Lally, Jaarsveld, Potts, Wardle 2009, there was a correlation between the length of time in regularly performing the tasks to reach the habit. Actually, they found that the range (in their study) is anywhere between 18 and 254 days. So, be gentle with yourself when changing a habit. It takes time.

SETTING YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS

In this study, it was also found that it is ok to miss a day or two in developing your habit. Those little “misses” won’t derail your progress. However, the study shows that the first few days of creating that habit are critical. In other words, pay close attention to being deliberate in your habit-forming actions those first few days.

GOING THE DISTANCE

There will be days when you just don’t feel like continuing to pursue your habit. These are the days that you will need to enlist the help of someone who can hold you accountable, either a friend or a coach. Find someone who believes in your habit-forming goal and is willing to pick you up when you just don’t “feel it”.

GIVE YOURSELF GRACE

This is the part that is not always easy for everyone. We can be our own harshest critic. When we are hard on ourselves, and beat ourselves up for not being 100%, we tend to sabotage our own progress. So, when you aren’t 100%, it’s ok, let it go and move on.

HABIT FORMING HELPERS

In the midst of our hectic lives, we need to understand that we are capable of developing new habits and being the best version of ourselves. Sometimes, though, we need to enlist the help of experts. Whether it’s fitness, nutrition or lifestyle goals, gaining the support of a Titanium Team member can be the game-changing element you need.
